1110 Days After Launch Dara Asks For Donations
Dara recently celebrated its 3rd anniversary and is now in its 4th year, or 1110th day if you prefer large numbers.
Since launch Dara has released several original products and services, including:
Dara Dashboard — User dash to create, archive and share your saves
Dara Extension — Browser extension to snapshot and archive web pages
Dara Dictionary — A dictionary whose definitions are on a blockchain.
Dara Gutenberg — A complete Gutenberg library compressed and archived
Dara Deathrow — Auto-arching Wikipedia articles nominated for deletion
Dara Superstonk — An archive of /r/Superstonk which faced censorship
A couple of other products were never completed but should be:
Dara Vault — A service for X to archive posts on a blockchain ledger.
Dara Mobile — A mobile app. Dara meets X.
Dara Node — Dara’s Encyclosphere node
Dara also contributed at protocol level by developing OPFS (Outer Planetary File System) for viewing files on IPFS and contributing to the ZWI standard for data archival. Some, but not yet all Dara code can be found on GitHub.
DONATIONS
To be blunt there will definitely be some Dara community members who will not be in a very giving mood on account of the low DARA token price which puts them out-of-pocket. Others, however, certainly made a good deal of money from Dara trades.
Whether you’re in or out of pocket, or never owned a DARA token at all, we can hopefully agree that Dara should continue its mission to save, and help others save, what would otherwise be lost (or censored) as ephemeral Internet data; electronic wisps of smoke.
To make permanent immutable digital copies of our most valued information and knowledge is as important as anything we can think of for the future betterment of humanity.
People using Dara can archive, publish or republish, and then share (or keep private) what matters to them personally. So Dara a bit like a personal Wayback Machine.
Some existing collections of knowledge, from Project Gutenberg’s vast eBook collection to a simple dictionary, are so intrinsically valuable that Dara tasked itself with preserving them too.
We were hoping to find someone to take over from Peerchemist before broadcasting this donation address, but we’ll have to go with this now as needs must.
Dara costs have been covered by founder Gig since team tokens ran out about a year ago. This was done from a sense of responsibility on his part following a failure to maintain a reasonable token price.
Dara will explore grants and other funds provided by the many organizations who sponsor projects not unlike it, but some costs need to be covered in the short-term.
Dara operates as an open source and community-driven project and can still make a successful future, especially if we band together.
